Center Dining Car

6 Mi. So. of Wilmington, Delaware, on Route 40 & 13

Definitely in operation in 1942. "Help Wanted" ads looking for a short order cook appeared in Wilmington's Morning News in late '42 and early '43. 

There is a Center Dining car listed on Frank Brusca's Route40.net in New Castle, which is just south of Wilmington. The page looks like it was last updated in 2010 so diner was probably in business at that time.

Date unknown. The facade in the illustration looks art deco and Prohibition ended in December 1933, so I'm guessing this is from the 1930s or 1940s. A check of Google maps shows that Purchase Street addresses now go no higher than 908, ending at Middle Street, so the building that contained this hotel and eatery was probably demolished. This area is the "heart of downton Bedford", and the Atlantic must've been a pretty swank place in its time.

A google search Jan 2018 failed to produce any info about the Highway Diner in any of the three towns listed on the matchbook cover, except for the 2003 photograph by John Margolies.
Date of matchbook cover is unknown.
It's possible one or all of the diners have changed names.

According to Diners of Pennsylvania this particular diner model was a 1948 Paramount.

Checking a street view on Google maps I see the brown brick building in the background is still standing, but the corner is now home to a Mini Mart.

The Bomb-A-Dear illustration tells me this is a World War II era matchbook. The only other thing I know about this place is that in June 1945 they were advertising four complete sets of pool tables for sale. They may have been upgrading their tables, or getting out of the pool table business, or just getting out of business altogether.

Opened in 1954 - Still Operating and a 3rd generation family business. Although the original address of the diner was listed as Danielson, it actually resides in Dayville. Dayville is a historical district and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

I love that Bill Griffith who draws Zippy the Pinhead occasionally features this diner in his comics.

Mayflower Cafe

 

The Mayflower Cafe is Wyoming's Finest Cafe.

Located in the Heart of Cheyenne, 1/2 Block from all Highways.

Famous from Coast to Coast for Quality Foods and Excellent Drinks.

Opened in 1928, The Mayflower was operated by brothers Sam, George, and Gus Andrews, Greek immigrants who had moved to Wyoming from Nebraska. The cafe expanded in 1947 to include a tavern. Eventually George's son Phil built Mayflower Dance Hall, billed as the largest western dance hall in Wyoming. A fire in 1976 destroyed the buildings on 17th Street and the site is now home to Grand Avenue Pizza.

The Dixie Pig

 

Everybody Eats at The Dixie Pig in Abilene

The Dixie Pig proclaims on its menu to be Abilene's Oldest Restaurant. It began operation in 1931. Mr. & Mrs. Charlie Langford were the proprietors.

One ad read, "Specializing in Short Orders, Sandwiches, Candies, Tobaccos. Featuring Those After the Show - Late at Night Snacks."

The original building was demolished in 1941 and replaced with a brick structure still at 14th and Butternut

Folks in Abilene love the Dixie Pig so much they had it declared a historical landmark. 

Still serving biscuits and gravy for breakfast.

Dean's Diner

Located 42 miles east of Pittsburgh in the foothills of the beautiful Allegheny Mountains.

Serving the public for 24 years. We never close.

There were at least three Dean Diners. The original Dean's opened in the summer of 1927 in Indiana, PA at Philadelphia and Seventh St. The Blairsville location, 16 miles south of Indiana, was operating as early as 1934. A third location opened in 1937 in Huntingdon, about 80 miles east of Blairsville. The Blairsville diner was damaged by fire in 1942, but was either restored or rebuilt. All three locations seem to have been operating in the 1950s. I could only find the Blairsville diner still in operation.
